AWS Reinvent Keynote Stage

Re:Invent Roundup

Today is the last day of the AWS Reinvent. With so many great new features and announcements made, these are just a few of our favourites.

Detecting dataset and model Bias (Machine Learning)

My first top pick is Amazon SageMaker Clarify. This new service is able to detect bias in datasets prior to training, and in models after training. A dataset and model bias could lead to an under-representation problem ultimately leading to inaccurate algorithms.

Computer Vision Applications on the Edge

Next we have AWS Panorama, a machine learning Appliance and Software Development Kit that allows you to bring computer vision to on-premise cameras to make predictions locally with high accuracy and low latency. Panorama will be especially valuable in the manufacturing industry where it can evaluate manufacturing quality, identify bottlenecks in industrial processes, and monitor workplace safety and security.

Lambda Insights

Rather than continuously monitoring and optimising your AWS Lambda functions, CloudWatch Lambda Insights does it all for you, by automatically collating and summarising Lambda performance metrics. This will help businesses to have clearer and simpler operational visibility.

Graviton 2 on Amazon Aurora

AWS Graviton2 Processors are now being used to power Amazon Aurora R6g instance types. With up to 7x the performance, 4x the number of compute cores, 2x larger private caches per core, 5x faster memory, 2x faster floating-point performance per core, and 50% faster per core encryption performance, the Amazon Aurora R6g has a significantly superior price-performance ratio.

Automated code reviews

AWS has refined CodeGuru, a developer tool that provides intelligent recommendations to improve your code quality. With automated code reviews, continuous monitoring of application performance in production, and provided recommendations for improving code quality and application performance, cost-efficiency and security of applications can be greatly improved.

Lambda increased granularity for compute time (Cost-efficiency)

Amazon has now increased the granularity of the billing time of an AWS Lambda function to 1ms, down from 100ms. With this pricing, there is now more of an incentive to optimise the duration of functions even if it is already well below 100ms. You’ll probably be seeing savings already but with some extra effort you can reduce costs even more and who doesn’t love to save money?
