What is the Well-Architected Framework and why is it important?

The Well-Architected framework has been developed to help cloud architects build the most secure, high-performing, resilient and efficient infrastructures possible for their applications. This framework provides a consistent approach for Firemind to evaluate architectures and provide guidance to help implement designs that will scale with your application needs over time.

The 5 Pillars

The AWS Well-Architected Framework describes the key concepts, design principles and architectural best practices for designing and running workloads in the cloud. By answering a set of foundational questions, set against 5 core pillars, we can see how well your architecture aligns with cloud best practices and provide guidance for making improvements.

Operational Excellence

The operational excellence pillar focuses on running and monitoring systems to deliver business value whilst continually improving processes and procedures. Key topics include automating changes, responding to events and defining standards to manage daily operations.

Security

The security pillar focuses on protecting information and systems. Key topics include confidentiality and integrity of data, identifying and managing who can do what with privilege management, protecting systems and establishing controls to detect security events.

Reliability

The reliability pillar focuses on ensuring a workload performs its intended function correctly and consistently when it’s expected to. A resilient workload quickly recovers from failures to meet business and customer demand.

Performance Efficiency

The performance efficiency pillar focuses on using IT and computing resources efficiently. Key topics include selecting the right resource types and sizes based on workload requirements, monitoring performance and making informed decisions to maintain efficiency as business needs evolve.

Cost Optimization

The cost optimization pillar focuses on avoiding unnecessary costs. Key topics include understanding and controlling where money is being spent, selecting the most appropriate and right number of resource types, analyzing spend over time and scaling to meet business needs without overspending.

Our Well-Architected Process

Firemind’s AWS Well-Architected Framework Review is expertly crafted and carried out by our leading Solution Architects and Lead Developers. We begin with an introductory call where we introduce the team you’ll be working with and explain the process and the deliverables of our solution.

We then book the AWS Well-Architected Framework Review Workshop. This typically last 4-6 hours and covers a broad range of questions that are based on the 5 pillars set by AWS.

After the workshop, we’ll create a detailed report that incorporates any risks identified and submit a detailed remediation plan with a priority list. If you’re happy to proceed with further remediation next steps, our team will create a statement of work and a timeline for you to accept.
